We will show you how easy it is to add an additional domain by using the user-friendly cPanel in HostGator. Using the cPanel to add an additional domain for HostGator is easy to use and understand. Before proceeding, remember that the adding additional domain feature is only available to Baby and Business hosting plans. Now, to learn how to add an additional domain to HostGator, follow these steps:
Steps on How to Add An Additional Domain to HostGator
First step: Log on to HostGator cPanel
After you sign-up for a HostGator service, you are going to receive an email containing your entire log in credentials. This username and password is the only log in credentials that you need no matter how many domains, parked domains and sub-domains that you create from your HostGator account.
Second step: On the cPanel, click “Addon Domains”
Scroll down and go to the Domains section and click “Addon Domains” in order to add another domain to your HostGator web server.
Third step: Fill up the details for your domain
The cPanel will show you a fill-up form to get the needed details for your domain. These are the new domain name, FTP username, document root, and of course the FTP password for your new website.
Enter your desired domain name and your FTP username and password. To get a stronger password, you could also use the Password Generator. If you are going to use Password Generator, make sure that you will write down immediately the provided password because it is composed of random letters, numbers and signs. In short, they are very hard to remember. The “Document Root” is where you define the root of the new domain that you are adding. It is advisable to use “public_html/domainname” to make FTP access easier for other developers.
After filling up all of the sections, make sure that the green check icons are shown, and then click the “Add Domain” button to finish the task and successfully add an additional domain on your HostGator account.
If it it easy to add a domain in your HostGator account, adding sub domain is much easier. For those who are new in web development, sub domains are part of a main domain. Sub domains are usually used to separate another topic or another section of a website. For example, Google has the sub domains mail.google.com, calendar.google.com and drive.google.com. Google.com is the main website while the others are focused on different operations such as sending/receiving emails, appointment/activity calendar, and cloud storage respectively.
Since you know how to add an additional domain for your HostGator account, we are now going to add sub domains on your main domain. The steps are very similar to adding a main domain.
Adding Sub Domain
Step 1: Log on to HostGator cPanel
Step 2: On the cPanel, click “Subdomains”
It is just like step 2 before, but this time, you are going to click “Subdomains”.
Step 3: Fill up details for sub domain
You are now going to enter two entries. The first one is your desired name for the sub domain. After that, select the main domain for which you are adding a sub domain. As you enter a sub domain name, the cPanel automatically generates the document root. However, you can change this to make management of document roots easy. It is preferable to use the sub don name as the document root and keep it under directly the home directory.
After filling all the sections, make sure you see the green check icon, and then click the “Create” button. You have now successfully added a sub domain on your main domain.
